Originally created to allow a convenient way of removing the hooklink, making it easier to thread on small PVA sticks. Other benefits soon became apparent as they allowed you to change rigs quickly! In addition, it also allowed you to unclip the hooklink whilst a fish was still in the net in the water and move your rod away making it easier to transport the fish to your unhooking mat.
